The Wilkins Group, Inc. (WGI) Hosts
The Urban League of Greater Dallas Students and Collin County
Community College Professors

On Saturday, April 17, 2004, WGI’s Tomeka Herod, Ronald Moses and Emma
Williams welcomed 10 young adults from The Urban League of Greater
Dallas (UL) to WGI’s headquarters in Richardson, TX.
UL participants included 9th, 10th and 11th
grade students from Dallas Independent School District’s (DISD) high
schools: DeSoto, Carter, Channel View, Skyline, Kimbell, Duncanville,
Lincoln and Madison.
The purpose of the visit was to share with the UL students information
about college and WGI, a successful African American-owned
telecommunications services firm. This initial meeting between WGI and
the UL students will foster an ongoing mentoring relationship that
could result in win-win scholarship, internship and employment
opportunities between WGI and UL.

To help prepare the UL pupils for the workforce, WGI’s Deborah Johnson
invited Collin County Community College’s (CCCC) Wayne Jones, B.S.E.E.,
M.S.E.E., E.I. Associate Dean and Chair - Engineering and John
Wilkins, Computer Networking Professor to share college preparation
information.
Professor Jones presented CCCC’s Engineering Technology’s Division
class options, semester scheduling and amenities that the various CCCC
campuses have to offer.
Professor Wilkins quizzed the students on various technology
nomenclatures. He presented Cisco books, technical lab manuals and
Internet coding books to students who answered correctly.
The
session concluded with an open floor question and answer session.
