Purpose of the WGI
Internship
WGI leaders
coined the phrase, “Technology and Education, Making the
Connection” to describe their
dream of preparing young adults with the skills to enter the hi-tech
industry. WGI president, Faye Moses Wilkins Wilkins, targeted the lack
of the right education as a major disadvantage that limits a student’s
opportunities when searching for a job in the high technology industry
upon graduation. To help students market themselves in a more
competitive manner, WGI leaders decided to offer the WGI Internship—a
practical education tool that equips students with the necessary,
basic technical talents.
Located in
Richardson’s Telecom Corridor®, WGI leaders realize that
the Dallas/Fort Worth area is one
of the most premier high-technology locations in the nation. By
positioning itself among leaders in the telecommunications field, WGI
is able to stay abreast of the latest technology and develop
relationships in the industry to prepare its interns for the job
market. WGI agrees to vigorously recruit high-achieving
students with a desire to work in the telecommunications and
consulting industry. These students are expected to be sharp,
professional and dedicated. WGI provides trained professionals to
offer a valuable internship for the students. If an opening exists
within WGI and the student exceeds expectations during his/her
internship, upon the student’s graduation, WGI will offer the student
a full-time permanent position.
Concept Statement
WGI has developed a part-time and full-time jobs
program in partnership with several high schools, colleges and
universities. WGI’s internship program is designed to attract
talented, devoted students with a desire to work in several aspects of
the telecommunications and consulting industry, e.g. structured
cabling, data networking, Web site development, documentation and
inventory, and wireless communication. The program will be a benefit
in the recruiting and retention of eager students for WGI and an
avenue for practical experience for students.
This jobs program is available every semester and
during Christmas holidays. WGI provides an average of three
internships each year. The students work from 20 to 40 hours each week
and are expected to be enrolled full time at an academic institution.
The president of WGI, Faye Moses Wilkins, is
responsible for the program and will work in concert with WGI’s
Community Relations and Operations departments to obtain students to
fill these positions. Once students have been placed in their
respective jobs, Ms. Moses Wilkins monitors their progress and
provides support throughout the semester. WGI project managers also
establish a mentorship program to ensure that the students are
receiving a good industrial practice experience.
Role of WGI
WGI agrees to employ at least one student and as
many as three students annually based on the student’s major and/or
career choice. The employment is part-time (during the academic year)
and full-time (during the Christmas break) and provides educational
and professional development for the students at a salary commensurate
to the level and ability required. WGI will provide trained
professionals to mentor and supervise the students in their area of
interest. The supervisor is responsible for an evaluation at the end
of each semester. The evaluation will be placed in the student’s file
for future reference. WGI has the right to terminate the student for
cause based on unsatisfactory work performance or non-compliance with
WGI company policies and/or procedures.
Role of the Student
Once the student has accepted a part-time or
full-time position with WGI, s/he agrees to work within the time frame
specified by WGI. The time frame will be negotiated by the university
co-op to benefit both WGI and the student’s academic schedule. The
student agrees to follow all company policies related to personnel,
safety, health, and security. The student also agrees to approach the
job in a work-like manner, that is, to be on time each day, ready and
willing to work.
